A large part of my practice is the intuitive process of video making, using the camera as a sketch book. I have been collecting small vignettes of snow falling. Due to the low resolution of the video, the image is distorted by the exaggerated pixels and over-saturated colour. They are mostly white, flat images and running around one minute long. One of these videos is displayed on a small (2.5”) LCD screen built in to a box. The video is displayed on a small screen to preserve elusive quality of the images, the “sketch” aesthetic of my process and the intimate nature of seeing video in a camera view-finder. Snow takes advantage of the inherent low image quality, distortions created by viewing angles and displaced collective familiarity of the LCD-monitors. The box is installed in the space so it blends into the architecture. The video image itself blends in to the flat white finish of the box. It is strategically placed so it can be forgotten and overlooked by the passersby. |
